As the name suggests, Main Beach is the main and therefore most easily accessible beach directly in front of the township of Byron Bay. It is a beautifully curved stretch of sand with a popular surfing break, soft white sand underfoot and expansive parklands with amenities at the end of Jonson Street. The Beach Hotel is directly opposite and the perfect place to enjoy Byron's beautiful views whilst mixing it with good friends. There is ample parking nearby even though it can get a bit tight at the height of the season. If you have ever seen pictures of Byron Bay, chances are iconic Main Beach figured dominantly.
The Surf Club is situated on the grassy foreshore and the beach is safe for children, with lifesavers patrolling from October to Easter each year. Just offshore you can dive or snorkel at the shipwreck of Tassie II which has been on the ocean floor since around 1944. It is believed to have beached at night, then hit the old jetty and eventually ended up in 2-3 metres of water alongside the old jetty. Main Beach is amazingly beautiful, very family friendly and has stunning views of the lighthouse on the headland, as well as Julian Rocks on the horizon. Lawson Street stretches the length of Byron’s Main Beach, offering a large range of classic beachside holiday accommodation right in town and only a short stroll to the sand or Byron’s famous food scene, shops and nightlife. If convenience is important to you, this is where you want to be.
